Let’s be honest, there are some really beautiful products out there. Great colours, beautiful packaging, clever campaigns and all the right words on the front: “clean”, “natural”, “organic”, “better for you”.
And yes, we notice them too! We’re consumers after all, and good marketing works…
But somewhere along the way, it became very easy to choose what looks good without always stopping to ask what is actually inside. The wellness space is bigger than ever, and words like clean and natural have become part of everyday marketing. That isn’t necessarily a bad thing. More people caring about what they consume is something worth celebrating. But it also gives us a reason to become a little more curious about what those words really mean.
Sometimes, all it takes is turning the package around.
Read the ingredients. Look at the certifications. Ask what gives a product its flavor, sweetness or texture. If something says organic, take a moment to see what is certified. This isn’t about being afraid of ingredients or deciding that every gum, filler or thickener is automatically bad. It’s about understanding what you’re buying and making a choice that matches what you want to put into your body.
We know that takes a little more effort, and most of us don’t want to stand in a grocery aisle researching every ingredient on our phones. That’s why we believe brands have a responsibility too. If we use words like clean and organic, we should be able to explain what sits behind them.
For Nova Scotia Organics, that story started more than 30 years ago.
Long before organic products filled entire sections of grocery and wellness stores, we were already working with organic ingredients, certifications and whole-food nutrition here in Nova Scotia. To put that into perspective, Canada’s federal organic regime did not come into effect until 2009. By then, Nova Scotia Organics had already spent years building products around an idea that was much less mainstream than it is today: that what goes into a product, and how that product is made, matters.
That history means a lot to us, not simply because we can say we have been around for a long time, but because we know how much work happens behind a word like organic.
For our certified products, that work starts well before an ingredient reaches the finished package. Suppliers and certifications are reviewed, documentation follows ingredients and lots, traceability is maintained, manufacturing procedures are followed and regular audits help keep those standards in place. Even things customers may never think about, like how materials are stored and handled or how production areas are cleaned, are part of the process.
It takes time, attention and investment, and you probably won’t see any of that on the front of the bag. That is exactly the point.
A beautiful package can introduce you to a product, but what happens behind that package tells you what you’re really getting. After more than 30 years of making products we believe in, we also want to help people better understand what they are choosing.
And that brings us to Toronto…
This weekend, Nova Scotia Organics will be at CHFA NOW Toronto, surrounded by retailers, buyers, distributors, wellness professionals and other people helping shape what Canadians will find on store shelves next.

For us, this isn’t simply another event where we put products on a table and hand out samples. It’s a chance to have these conversations in person, answer questions and share more of the work, care and thought that goes into what we make.
It’s also an opportunity to connect with more retailers and partners who can help us bring those products to more people. Because making something we believe in is only part of the job. We want more consumers to walk into their local health store, grocery store or wellness retailer and find genuinely thoughtful options on the shelf, making it a little easier to choose based on what’s inside rather than the loudest claim on the package.
If you work in the natural, organic or wellness industry and you’ll be attending CHFA NOW Toronto, come visit us at Booth #2513. Meet our team, taste what we’ve been working on and ask us anything! We’re proud of what goes into our products and always happy to share the process behind them, because transparency has always been part of how we do things.
And if you’re not attending CHFA, the message is just as simple: next time a beautiful product catches your eye, enjoy the packaging, but turn it around too. What’s on the front may get your attention, but what’s behind it deserves it too.
At Nova Scotia Organics, that’s what we mean by Clean Beyond the Claims.
