A warm matcha latte that also gives you your protein? Yes, you can!
One of the most common questions about adding protein powder to hot drinks is whether the heat somehow “ruins” the protein. The short answer is NO. Your protein doesn’t disappear just because your drink is warm.
Heat can change the shape of a protein (this is called denaturation), but your body can still digest it and use its amino acids. In fact, studies on plant proteins have found that even after heating, their essential amino acids remain available.
Researchers have even tested pea and rice protein together (two of the proteins found in our Matcha Plant Protein) at temperatures above what you would normally use for a latte. While the heat changed the structure of the proteins, it didn’t change their essential amino acid composition.
So, your protein shake definitely doesn’t have to be cold.
But What About the Matcha?
Matcha likes things a little cooler. Water around 70–80°C (158–176°F) is a great range for a latte: hot enough to prepare your drink, without the boiling temperatures that can make matcha taste more bitter and affect some of its naturally occurring compounds.
If you love a stronger, earthier matcha flavor, add ½–1 teaspoon of our Organic Matcha Tea to your Matcha Plant Protein.
Now that we’ve settled the science, let’s make the good part!
How to Make Your Matcha Protein Latte?
Ingredients
- 1 serving Nova Scotia Organics Matcha Plant Protein
- ½ cup hot water, not boiling
- 1 cup of your favourite plant-based milk
- ½–1 tsp Nova Scotia Organics Organic Matcha Tea (optional for a stronger matcha flavor)
- Maple syrup or honey, optional
1. Start with the protein.
Add the Matcha Plant Protein to your mug and slowly add the hot water while whisking until smooth.
2. Make it creamy.
Warm your plant-based milk and froth it if you can (that little bit of foam makes the difference). Pour it into your matcha protein mixture and stir.
3. Add your own touch.
Love a stronger matcha flavor? Whisk in a little Organic Matcha Tea. Prefer it slightly sweet? Add a touch of maple syrup or honey.
That’s it. Your warm Matcha Protein Latte is ready to enjoy!
Protein Season Doesn't End When Summer Does
As fall settles in and colder mornings arrive, you don’t have to choose between your warm, cozy drinks and getting your protein in. Your Matcha Plant Protein can come along for the season too!
Now all that’s left to do is warm up the water, make your latte, and find a cozy spot to watch the leaves turn red.
